The Svarlbard Seed Valt – sometimes better known as the Doomsday Vault – is located on the island of Spitsbergen, Norway. Its mission is to hold ‘spare’ samples and exact copies of plant seeds held in genebanks worldwide, to provide a safety net against accidental loss of diversity. The building is drilled 120 metres (390 ft) into the side of a mountain, far away from civilization to avoid global crisis, natural disasters, and has a door built to survive nuclear warfare.
